An alternative investment is an investment product other than traditional investments such as stocks, bonds, cash or property. The term is most commonly used to describe investments in tangible assets such as Art, Wine, Antiques, or Coins but may include some financial assets such as commodities like Oil, Copper or Wheat futures. Private equity and hedge funds are also sometimes called alternative investments and the term is a relatively loose one.
While Paisley Financial does not deal
directly in Art and Fine Wine we are experts in investing in
the Futures markets and cash metals such as Silver, Gold,
Platinum and Palladium. All of our advisors have over 15 years
experience in the Futures Industry which we believe gives us
an edge over the typical Investment advisor. Learn more about
The Merrill Lynch/Cap Gemini Ernst & Young World Wealth Report 2003, based on 2002 data, showed high net worth individuals, as defined in the report, to have 10% of their financial assets in alternative investments. For the purposes of the report, alternative investments included "structured products, luxury valuables and collectibles, hedge funds, managed futures, and precious metals".
Alternative investments are also used as a tool to reduce overall investment risk through diversification due to the low correlation with traditional financial investments such as stocks and shares. This can make it a very attractive hedge for those investors that want to hedge their current market risk.
One of the more common alternative investments is adding gold to your IRA or other type of plan. Gold typically works as an hedge against inflation so consequently can potentially add protection to your portfolio.
So the key question being debated in today's marketplace is, should you include alternative investments in your portfolio, as well as, whether or not you should increase your allocations and what level of risk is acceptable for your situation.
Since we are one of a very few multi-manager firms where our managers manage both traditional and alternative investments, we can answer these questions for you. More importantly, we can help you build a well balanced program that can bring you higher return potential, diversification and access to top performing managers who are not generally available to smaller investors.
Because of the high degree of investment analysis that may be required before buying you should always consult your Paisley Advisor to see if there is an alternative investment strategy that is right for you.
